The UF bat houses
The University of Florida bat houses, 2664 Museum Road, across from Lake Alice, are the world’s largest occupied bat houses, UF says, built to hold about 750,000 bats. There is no fee and no staff on site. The bats normally pour out over 15 to 20 minutes after sunset on calm, warm evenings above 65 degrees; spring through early summer is the best season. Arrive before sunset, watch the western sky over the pines, and do not walk under the houses. A free parking lot sits next to the field, and leashed pets are allowed.
Downtown: concerts, yoga and line dancing
Bo Diddley Plaza, 111 E. University Ave., is the city’s free stage:
- Free Fridays Concert Series: the city calls it the region’s longest-running and largest free outdoor concert series, with local and regional bands playing rock, reggae, R&B, soul, funk and blues. Shows run 7 to 9 p.m. on Fridays in season.
- Free yoga: 9 to 10 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.
- Smooth Flava line dancing: 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.
- Movie nights and festivals: the city also shows free movies on the plaza and hosts the Great Pumpkin Bash in October and the Downtown Festival and Art Show in November.
Parks and trails
- Depot Park, 874 SE Fourth St.: a playground and splash pad, walking paths and a stormwater wetland on 32 acres; the play area opens at 7 a.m.
- Gainesville-Hawthorne State Trail: 16 paved miles from Boulware Springs Nature Park, 3300 SE 15th St., through Paynes Prairie. No fee; open 8 a.m. to sunset.
- City nature parks: Bivens Arm, Loblolly Woods and Boulware Springs have shady trails; hours and rules are on our parks and trails guide.
Some of Gainesville’s best-known outdoor spots charge a small entry fee, including Sweetwater Wetlands Park, Paynes Prairie and Devil’s Millhopper; see the parks guide for each.
The library
Alachua County Library District branches host free programs such as story times, crafts and talks; the district’s event calendar lists them by branch.
