Gainesville celebrates The Streatery, its new car-free block of SW First Avenue, 5 to 11 p.m. Friday with live music, food and a kids zone. Free.

The city of Gainesville throws a free grand opening party for The Streatery from 5 to 11 p.m. Friday. The Streatery is the block of SW First Avenue downtown that has been rebuilt as a pedestrian-only street.

The evening starts with a ribbon-cutting at 5 p.m., according to the city’s Streatery project page. The street itself is already open.

What is on Friday night

The city’s grand opening event listing promises:

  • a ribbon-cutting and remarks to start the night
  • photo booths and a giant marquee
  • a “taste of downtown” with bites from local restaurants
  • a kid and family zone with activities and a bounce house
  • live music on an outdoor main stage and inside nearby venues
  • a closing jam with Gainesville musicians “across genres and generations”

The address is 106 SW First Ave. Entry is free and open to the public, the city said.

What The Streatery is

The project rebuilt SW First Avenue between South Main Street and SW Second Street. The roadway was more than 100 years old, the city said. It is now a curbless street for people on foot, built for markets, festivals, concerts and outdoor dining.

The city’s project page lists what went in:

  • brick pavers without bevels, so the surface is level for wheelchairs and for people in heels
  • retractable bollards at the intersections, lowered for maintenance and events
  • dimmable street lights, string lights overhead and programmable uplighting in the trees
  • power outlets on both sides of the street for events and food trucks
  • raised crossings at SW First Street and SW Second Street, built partly with historic bricks saved from the old road

The existing live oaks were kept. Water and sewer lines under the street were replaced and enlarged by GRU, which paid for that part of the work.

Construction began in April. When work started, Mayor Harvey Ward said it would make downtown “more accessible, more usable and more fun for all of us,” in the city’s April construction release. Crews had expected to finish in October.

What it cost

The Gainesville City Commission approved a $4.5 million construction agreement with D.E. Scorpio Corporation in March 2026, the city said in a June progress release. The city’s project page puts the total budget for planning, design and construction at $4.95 million.

The money comes from the gas tax fund and the Gainesville Community Reinvestment Area. The GCRA is a 10-year program, running from 2019 to 2029, paid for by the city and Alachua County.

Interactive public art is still to come. The city plans to request proposals for a piece in the middle of the corridor. Furnishings and planters in the center of the street are on hold until the art is chosen, the project page says.

The block next door

Lot 10, the city land that fronts The Streatery, is set to become housing. In January the City Commission authorized a ground lease and development agreement with AMJ. The project page lists these terms:

  • a mixed-use building of at least seven stories
  • at least 104 homes, with at least 70 for households earning up to 120% of the area median income
  • at least 5,500 square feet of commercial space

The building’s frontage on The Streatery will be an open plaza, the city said.
