Alachua County starts $4 million of work on NW 83rd Street by Santa Fe College the week of Nov. 9. Most of it happens overnight, 6:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.
Alachua County crews start work on NW 83rd Street, the road along Santa Fe College’s main campus, the week of Nov. 9. Most of it will happen at night.
The county has budgeted $4 million for the project. It covers new pavement, a new sidewalk, a raised crosswalk with flashing beacons and three rebuilt traffic signals. The county and the college announced the work in an Oct. 30 release and held a kickoff on campus Thursday.
The road carries about 12,000 vehicle trips a day, the county said.
When the work happens
The county gave this schedule:
| Work | Expected start | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Concrete work | Week of Nov. 9 | About one month |
| Asphalt, including the raised crosswalk | Week of Dec. 14 | About three weeks |
| Traffic signals | Early 2027 | About one month |
Most construction will take place between 6:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. The county said that is to keep disruption to drivers and students down. The signal work depends on when equipment and parts arrive.
What the county is building
- Repaving: milling and resurfacing the existing asphalt, then new pavement markings.
- Sidewalk: a new sidewalk along the east side of the road.
- Shared-use path: repairs to the path on the west side.
- Curb ramps: replaced at the signalized intersections.
- Raised crosswalk: with flashing beacons, between Admin Road and NW 31st Avenue.
- Signals: rebuilt at North Road, South Road and NW 23rd Avenue, with optical vehicle sensors and new electronic parts.
The money comes from the county’s 10-year, $250 million Transportation Capital Improvement Program.
“These much-needed improvements will enhance roadway conditions and pedestrian infrastructure along a corridor serving Santa Fe College, students and nearby residential communities,” said Ramon Gavarette, the county’s public works director.
Santa Fe College President Paul Broadie II said the work would “help traffic flow smoothly, enhance walkability of the area, and improve safety.”
What it means for you
- Evening classes and night shifts: most of the work is planned between 6:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m., so that is when you are most likely to meet crews. Allow extra time.
- Detours: the county’s release does not mention a detour or a full closure. We will update this story if it publishes one.
- Walking or biking to campus: the east side gets a sidewalk for the first time, and the raised crosswalk near NW 31st Avenue goes in from mid-December.
