The city’s off-leash dog parks are at Abby Wambach Park, leashed dogs are welcome on the Hogtown Creek Greenway and the 16-mile state trail, and several of the best-known nature spots, including Sweetwater Wetlands and parts of Paynes Prairie, ban pets entirely.

Where dogs are not allowed
- Sweetwater Wetlands Park: no pets, because of conflicts with wildlife.
- Paynes Prairie’s La Chua and Cone’s Dike trails: pets are banned because of alligators, snakes and bison, Florida State Parks says.
- Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo: pets are not permitted; service animals are welcome.
Restaurant patios: the doggie dining permit
Florida law (section 509.233 of the Florida Statutes) lets local governments allow dogs in designated outdoor areas of restaurants. In Gainesville, a restaurant needs a doggie dining permit from the city’s Planning Division, applied for through PermitGNV. If you want to eat on a patio with your dog, ask whether the restaurant has the permit; it covers only the outdoor area it names. Restaurants with questions can call the Planning Division at 352-334-5023.
Leash rules and vaccinations
- Leashes: the City of Gainesville’s park pages ask for pets to be leashed, and off-leash play is for the designated dog park areas. The city’s animal rules are in its Code of Ordinances; outside city limits, Alachua County Animal Services enforces the county’s rules.
- Rabies: section 828.30 of the Florida Statutes requires every dog, cat and ferret 4 months or older to be vaccinated against rabies by a licensed veterinarian.
- Pick up after your dog, and bring water for longer walks.
Dog events
The K9 Splash Bash lets dogs swim at the city’s H. Spurgeon Cherry (Westside) Pool, 946 NW 31st Drive. In 2026 it runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, with a $5 per dog fee and proof of rabies vaccination required, according to the organizer, Newberry Animal Hospital. Money raised supports local animal rescues.
